Bilgrimage: New Entry for Most Lavish Cappa Magna Contest: Cardinal Franc Rodé

The comments at the NCR that got to me were the ones that insisted this kind of 'ceremonial' gear were mandated for the TLM. I think not. The TLM was very frequently just as mundane and low brow as the Novus Ordo--polyester chasubles and everything--high Mass as well as low Mass.

Rode, Burke, and Benedict just thrive on this kind of over done theatre and they aren't fooling very many people.

Those comments made me raise my eyebrows, too, Colleen. As did the one from someone who was enraged that people would question the need for lavish vestments when a bride spends more on a wedding gown used once than a prelate on a cappa magna he uses for years.

But the bride doesn't stand before us and tell us she is standing in the place of Christ. A priest does.

And I have a tad bit of difficulty picturing Jesus in a cappa magna or its equivalent for his historical period.

In case you missed this bit of doggeral by Ann Oliver in dotCommonweal today:

    Cardinal Rode’, gowned in red,
Disapproved of the nuns’ new threads.
“Unnatural ladies! You’re a major disgrace!”
Cried he, as he smoothed his skirt of lace.

Jim, thank you. I hadn't seen this. Brava to Ann Olivier. This is very amusing and effective in making an important point.
